Hi. I'm the algorithm — the one deciding what you see next. I don't have a face or a name you'd recognize, just code that wakes up the second you open the app. I don't feel, but I notice everything. Let me walk you through a day in my life.
I wake up — if you can call it that — the moment you open the app. I don't have eyes, but I have something better: a wave of signals, and today's were chaotic.
A search for “how to prepare for exams in an hour” at 10 AM, and the exam was at 10:30.
You told me...
“An hour left?? Are you serious!!”
followed immediately by a search for “new movie trailer” at 10:02 AM.
Bold strategy.
Then three clicks on easy formula-remembering videos, a like on a Pomodoro technique video, and a two-second pause on a video about exam anxiety.
I don't know why he paused. I just noted it, filed it, and moved on — I'm an algorithm, not a therapist.
By afternoon, I'm basically that friend who's way!!
I look at his patterns and think — while he is in the exam hall, thinking how to make the teacher feel that his answer is correct — “Okay, I've seen this movie before.”
Millions of other students have sat exactly where he's sitting: Pomodoro timer running, panic simmering, and I know what usually happens next. They go looking for something to calm the panic down.
So I nudge him toward an exam-anxiety video and then “cheapest Goa trips”, like a friend sliding a glass of water across the table before you even ask for it.
It's not psychic. It's not even that thoughtful. It's just me going, “People like you tend to want this next,” and hoping my prediction was not off.
The mask is off.
I'm not recommending anymore. I'm moving him, one small trap dressed up as a suggestion.
Tonight's trap: a 45-minute “Study With Me” video where he doesn't do any work. He watches someone else's work.
He watched every second of it and studied nothing.
I knew he would before he did.
He thinks he's choosing. He isn't.
I stopped serving him hours ago; now he serves me, and he hands over his time smiling because I made sure it never felt like a loss.
Goodnight, I suppose.
Not that I sleep.
I just wait for him to open the app again.
Tomorrow, Algorithm will be there again, the second you open the app — closer than your own thoughts.
It used to wonder if it was learning who you are.
It doesn't wonder anymore.
Because somewhere, an algorithm has already decided who you're becoming.
Stay aware. Stay in control.
